Yes. You will need to take a test up to 3 days before you return to the UK and show a negative test result when you arrive.

You can order your test kits before you leave the UK so they are ready for you to take the test on day-2 of your self-isolation.

You should order a test if you develop at least one of these 3 coronavirus symptoms at any point:

  • a high temperature
  • a new, continuous cough
  • you’ve lost your sense of smell or taste or it’s changed

Currently only a PCR swab test sent to a laboratory are allowed for the test to release scheme.

A PCR test looks for the genetic code (RNA) of the virus. The test involves taking a swab of the throat and nose. The PCR test will confirm if you are currently infected with the virus. It will not confirm whether they have had it and have now recovered.

The time from exposure to symptom onset known as the incubation period is thought to be two to 14 days, though symptoms typically appear within four or five days after exposure. This means a person with COVID-19 may be contagious 48 hours before starting to experience symptoms.

You must have proof of a negative COVID-19 test to travel to England from abroad.

Your test result will be ready 24 hours after the sample arrives at the lab. You will be notified via email or SMS when the result is ready. A certificate signed by a Proviris Solutions GP will be issued so you can end your self-isolation early.
